Miami Tribe of Oklahoma Repatriation Policy, Procedure, & Practice

Introduction

kweehsitamankwi aaponaminkia - (We respect/honor what has been returned.)

The federally recognized Miami Tribe of Oklahoma respectfully embraces the inherent responsibility and duty to repatriate the human remains, and funerary objects of our ancestors, and the objects of cultural patrimony of our people from museum collections as provided through the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA.) Our work in repatriation began shortly after the law was enacted in 1990, and in these three decades of commitment our experiences in consultation and repatriation action have served to return many ancestors and their personal grave objects back to the earth.

It is the goal of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma to assist museums working to comply with the NAGPRA through engaging in respectful, meaningful consultation on their inventories and summaries. The Miami Tribe is interested in consulting with any federal agencies, museums, universities, state agencies, local governments, or any institution that receives Federal funds and may have objects of cultural significance to the Tribe.

This website was created with the support of a National Park Service NAGPRA Documentation Grant to provide helpful resources to institutions prior to engaging in consultation with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma.
